This thriving innovation hub in Hefei is not short of entrepreneurial stories. However, Wu Jing's story is destined to write a unique chapter.
She is the leader of Anhui VOOFU Permanent Magnet Technology Co., Ltd., a female businesswoman who has "reverse-rolled down" from the financial investment hub to the real manufacturing sector. Over eight years, she transformed a grassroots team of just a dozen people into a national specialized and innovative "little giant". She introduced the permanent magnet speed regulation technology with an energy-saving rate of 20% to 50% to thousands of factories in China, and also opened the door to the global market with her advanced technology output strategy.
From the capital field to the workshop, from Shanghai to Hefei, Wu Jing "flexibly" controlled the "hard core" and "serenely" held fast to her original aspiration. The path she has taken is not only the practical history of an entrepreneur but also a heartfelt response from a new era Anhui merchant to serve the industry and serve the country.
I. Cross-border Transformation: Not an "Outsider", But Embrace the "Iron Mass"
In her early career, she worked at a provincial state-owned enterprise, meticulously analyzing historical data in her financial role, which cultivated her rigorous and pragmatic professional character. Later, she shifted to the field of equity investment, honing her precise business judgment skills during the process of predicting future trends. However, throughout her years of investment career, a sense of powerlessness as an "outsider" persisted: After screening the projects, she could only wait passively for the results, and it was difficult for her to truly accompany the enterprises in their growth. Even if she identified problems, it was hard for her to deeply intervene in the project process.
"Being in finance is about sorting out historical data, while investing is about predicting future events. We are on completely different perspectives." Wu Jing admitted. When the invested projects encountered an industry winter, her long-time friend Xu Xiu Kun invited her, and this time, she chose to transform from an "outsider observer" to an "inside entrepreneur".
From the glamorous financial circle to the tough manufacturing industry, the scene of her first visit to the VOOFU workshop is still vivid in her memory: She originally thought that the physical projects should be high-tech, high-end, and sophisticated. But it turned out that she had to spend every day working with "iron masses". Others were rushing from the physical sector to the financial sector, but she chose to return from the financial sector to the physical sector; others were chasing the rapid increase in capital value, but she chose to create industrial value herself.
Starting as an enterprise consultant and eventually taking on the role of general manager, this career transition, which she considers to be the "last thing" of her career, is described by her as: "Either make this succeed, or go back to being a family person. If you want to do it, you must do it to the best of your ability."
II. Breaking the deadlock and generating vitality: From 100,000 to "Little Giant", she builds a protective moat for technology
When Wu Jing took over VOOFU, the first challenge she faced was the company's financial predicament.
This technology-driven, high-growth start-up with core technologies and promising market prospects had never received external financing. It relied solely on its initial accumulation for slow growth. "As a modern enterprise, it is necessary to moderately leverage leverage to accelerate development. When I was a venture capitalist, I allocated billions of funds each year. At VOOFU, even 100,000 yuan as the starting capital was hard to obtain." The huge gap did not make her retreat; instead, it strengthened her determination to "generate vitality" for the company.
A turning point came from a visit to the enterprise by the management team, in collaboration with guarantee institutions and banks. They helped VOOFU secure its first 1 million yuan of financing guarantee loan, achieving a crucial breakthrough from 0 to 1. Since then, the financing process has become increasingly smooth, with the loan amount gradually increasing from the millions to the tens of millions. When the company was awarded the national specialized and innovative "Little Giant" status, it could smoothly obtain bank credit solely based on its own qualifications.
The injection of funds quickly activated the two core sectors of the market and R&D.
In the market sector, the benchmark orders that were once reluctant to undertake due to high working capital pressure and strict payment conditions finally had the confidence to strive for; the sales team expanded from less than 10 people to over 70 people, and there was no more worry about market expansion.
In the R&D sector, Wu Jing advocated for continuous heavy investment. She jointly established a high-specification experimental platform with a military-industrial enterprise, with a contract amount of over 8 million yuan. 80% to 90% of the products could complete simulation testing within the factory, and no unverified "blind boxes" would be delivered to customers. As of now, VOOFU has cumulatively applied for over 300 patents, including nearly 100 invention patents, and maintains an annual patent increment of over 20, with its core technology being rated as "domestically leading" by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
"Industry insiders often say, 'If others have it, VOOFU must have it; if others don't have it, VOOFU can customize it.' This is the confidence accumulated by the team through years of R&D investment. Deputy General Manager Yu Zhuanyan also admitted that after General Manager Wu's arrival, the company continuously expanded the R&D team, deepened cooperation with universities and enterprises, and gradually embarked on its own technical path, building an uncopyable technical barrier."
III. Strengthening the Positioning: Not Engaging in Low-End Assembly, Only Providing High-End Technology Output
After firmly establishing a foothold in the domestic market, Wu Jing turned her attention to the broader overseas markets.
The domestic carbon neutrality policy has opened up the growth space for the permanent magnet energy-saving industry and attracted a large number of entrants. The internal competition within the industry has already begun to emerge. In Wu Jing's view, while maintaining a strong presence in the domestic market, it is necessary to open up a second growth curve in overseas markets, and to do so from the very beginning on a high-end route.
"Going global does not involve low-end assembly processing. We only provide high-end technology output. We aim to establish a Chinese brand for permanent magnet technology." This was the clear principle she set for her team.
This confidence is rooted in the all-round advantages of China's permanent magnet industry. "Permanent magnet materials have developed most maturely in China. The widespread use of permanent magnet motors in domestic new energy vehicles is the best proof. Many regions overseas did not choose the permanent magnet technology route precisely because we have mastered the most core raw materials and technologies." Wu Jing believes that there are vast gaps waiting to be filled in the overseas market.
In her view, the value of permanent magnet transmission technology is truly a win-win for all parties: for enterprises, there is a stable economic return; for users, they can typically recover the investment cost within two to three years; for society, it can achieve a 20%-50% energy-saving rate, helping to achieve the global carbon neutrality goals. "We have this sense of mission. We will bring the mature technologies developed in China to the world."
Now, VOOFU is using Asia-Pacific as a pivot point and is continuously deepening its focus on core markets such as Southeast Asia and Europe, building a global local service network. From early on introducing and absorbing foreign technologies to now reverse-exporting with its own brand, Wu Jing leads VOOFU on a new path of China's intelligent manufacturing going global.
IV. The Essence of Huizhou Merchants: Being flexible and honest to establish oneself, and maintaining a steadfast初心 through the tranquil flow of time.
When one steps away from the role of an entrepreneur, the most distinct characteristic on Wu Jing's person is the inherent Huizhou temperament - unassuming and not impulsive, firmly committed to the direction once decided.
She often says, "The ancient Huizhou culture is profound, with a deep-rooted emphasis on education and character. This has deeply influenced her principles of conduct: first is做人 (being a person), then is做事 (doing things). Everything must be self-examined. Is it right to do it with a conscience? The rest is to do one's best and accept whatever comes. Everything will be accepted calmly."
Managing a team composed entirely of technical personnel, Wu Jing, who has no technical background, relies on the flexible wisdom of "understanding first, then solving." Her natural affinity for women, combined with the empathetic ability of putting oneself in others' shoes, enables her to always understand the difficulties from the perspective of the technical staff and jointly seek solutions. This empathetic way of getting along makes the technical team willing to trust her with their backs; and what she gives back to the team is a longer-term market perspective and a more determined strategic determination.
Sales Director Yan Bin said that General Manager Wu has a broad market perspective, not limited to short-term profits, and is willing to continuously invest in the market and research and development; Sales Director Jin Liang also remembers that it was General Manager Wu who made the final decision on the route for high-end technology exports, aiming to create a brand and have dignity in Chinese manufacturing.
This calmness and persistence also conceal her attachment to her hometown. Moving the enterprise back to Hefei is not only an industrial choice, but also an emotional destination - the ancestral homeland of her parents and grandparents is around the factory. Returning to develop in her hometown makes her feel more at ease and stable. And the "no disturbance" business environment of Hefei allows her to lead her team to deeply root in the real economy without distractions.
Epilogue: Sailing Far in the Magnetic Sea, Steadfast Progress Brings Far-reaching Achievements
Over the past eight years of entrepreneurship, from finance to the real economy, from Shanghai to Hefei, from within China to the global stage, Wu Jing has always been doing "difficult but correct" things.
She gave up the ease of the capital sector and chose the weighty aspect of physical manufacturing; broke away from the homogenization and competition, and opened up a new path of high-end overseas expansion; with flexible strength, she solved problems, and with a calm heart, she deeply cultivated technology. In each permanent magnet device, there lies the tenacity in tackling technical challenges and the original intention of serving the country through industry.
"Regardless of how VOOFU develops in the future, we will always hold onto the main thread of permanent magnet equipment, and unwaveringly deepen our efforts on this path. We must go out and promote such excellent industrial energy-saving technology to the world, to realize our dream of being the best permanent magnet technology in the world."
With a flexible mindset pursuing dreams, with integrity in one's conduct, and with a long-term perspective achieving great success. On the track of permanent magnet energy conservation, Wu Jing used eight years to prove that gentle power can also drive the most advanced industrial equipment, and quiet persistence can eventually reach the most vast destinations. With her feminine grace, she continues to write the industrial report card of the new era's Anhui entrepreneurs, and is steadily moving towards the peak of global permanent magnet technology.
